Smoke Signals

This was one the first time I'd ever seen an independent film from start to finish, and it left a powerful impression on me. Not just the way the movie was filmed or the techniques used, but the message that the plot projected to the viewer.

Smoke Signals follows the story of two native american men; Victor and Thomas. Saved from the same fire by the same man (Victor's father), they've grown up on the reservation together their whole lives, Thomas becoming an intelligent but extremely eccentric character, and Victor a hard, untrusting young man. Together, these two embark on a journey that gives both (especially Victor) a new perspective on what it means to be a father, a son, a friend, a human being and a native american.

The film specifically focuses on the issues of learning to forgive and forget what has happened in the past, that a families love knows no boundaries, and that we must accept and live with what we were given , even if we don't like it.

The film was pretty emotionally charged, but there were definitely light hearted jokes thrown around, and that made the movie all the more enjoyable. I would certainly watch this again.
