Funny Farm
Chevy Chase has a certain genre of his own built around the way he does comedy. There's no over dramatic stupidity associated with all of the characters like in many other movies, instead his comedy succeeds from the use of irony and exaggeration. His characters always find usual events falling apart and hitting rock bottom all around him. The way he goes about dealing with people like the crazy mailman and when his wife becomes the successful writer that he was supposed to be, creates a great setup for cynical laughter. The movie builds through a series of events of catastrophic attempts for the Farmers to fit in and make the best out of their rural farm town life. It leads up to the finale, the payoff, the town that we have been shown to love for being so abstract and embarrassing makes a complete turn around for the interest of money and puts on a 100% fake act in order to look like what people expect from a type of town. This is funny for a number of reasons, the main being that peoples expectations are completely unreal of what is actually there and someplace so depressing can shape itself up for some money. I actually found this movie to be quite funny and a real fun and enjoyable watch.
