Jaws is a special movie because of the very real feeling of danger it produces. Although I suspected that the shark would be caught, I was still terrified when the boat started to fall apart, and it seemed that is was the end of the line for the sheriff. This is in part due to the excellent special effects. The shark seemed very real, in its behaviors, and the way it looked. Also, the acting is fantastic, especially the fisherman, who really stuck out and helped to give the whole movie more character.
This isn't to say the movie is perfect. It was very slow at first, and the movie didn't pull me in until the little boy was eaten at the beach. This is in stark contrast to the Sixth Sense, which was both frightening and intriguing throughout the entire film. In fact, I think Jaws is very much lacking in an interesting/worthwhile plot, and it seems that its only purpose is to pull in a viewer and scare them. But maybe that's the point.
